A string inverter is a single central inverter, usually mounted near the electrical panel, that converts the combined direct-current output of panels wired in series, called strings, into alternating current for the home. String systems have fewer components on the roof and the inverter is easy to reach for service. Because panels in a string are linked, shading on one panel can reduce the output of the whole string unless panel-level optimizers or modern multi-input designs are used. Hybrid string inverters can also manage a battery. String inverters often carry shorter standard warranties than microinverters, so check the warranty term and the cost of replacing the inverter during the system's life.
