What Eversource pays for exported solar
For a new rooftop system, Eversource credits exported energy at about 23.60¢ per kWh[1], against an average Connecticut residential price of 27.47¢[2]. Exports first offset what you use over each month at the retail rate; this rate applies only to the surplus left over.
Other Connecticut utilities, co-ops and municipal utilities set their own rates; check your utility's current tariff.
State rules that apply
- What the rule says: “Solar Production Charge / Solar Energy Adjustment per kWh - $0.0402 For Netting Tariff projects, the Currently Applicable Retail Rate for all customers will be calculated”[1]
What it means for sizing and batteries
When exports earn close to the retail price, sizing the system to cover your yearly use is usually the best value, and a battery is mainly for backup rather than savings.
The calculator uses the statewide rule until we add utility rates. See what solar costs in Connecticut.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does Connecticut have net metering?
Classic kWh net metering closed to new systems at the end of 2021; Eversource and UI customers now choose RRES Buy-All ($0.3289/kWh for all output in 2026, 20 years) or Netting, where exports earn monetary bill credits at the full retail rate but 2026 Netting projects pay a $0.0402/kWh charge on production. Netting therefore credits exports at retail (net metering), with a production charge.
