What ComEd pays for exported solar
For a new rooftop system, ComEd credits exported energy at about 8.41¢ per kWh[1], against an average Illinois residential price of 19.23¢[2]. Every exported kWh earns this credit, which covers the supply part of the bill but not delivery charges.
Other Illinois utilities, co-ops and municipal utilities set their own rates; check your utility's current tariff.
State rules that apply
- What the rule says: “Full retail rate net metering will no longer be available to customers interconnecting renewable energy systems after December 31, 2024.”[3]
What it means for sizing and batteries
When exports earn much less than retail, each kWh you use at home as it is produced is worth more than one you export. Size to your daytime and evening use, shift loads (laundry, dishwasher, EV charging) to sunny hours or the plan's off-peak window, and price a battery against the gap between the retail and export rates.
The calculator uses the statewide rule until we add utility rates. See what solar costs in Illinois.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does Illinois have net metering?
Customers interconnecting with ComEd or Ameren after December 31, 2024 get supply-only net metering: exported energy is credited only at the electricity supply rate, while delivery charges are billed on all energy drawn from the grid. Systems with permission to operate before 2025 keep full retail net metering for the life of the system.
