Maine Net Metering and Solar Export Credits

Updated Data verified Nov 5, 2026

Net metering. Maine's Net Energy Billing kWh Credit Program is open to all customers of Central Maine Power and Versant: each kWh your panels send to the grid offsets a kWh you buy, reducing both delivery and supply charges, and monthly surpluses bank as kWh credits for a rolling 12 months. Credits unused after 12 months expire without payment (their value goes to low-income assistance), and you still pay the monthly customer charge; the 2025 law (PL 2025 c. 430, LD 1777) closed new NEB agreements only for grid-side (community/front-of-meter) projects after Dec 31, 2025, leaving rooftop systems on the customer's side of the meter eligible.

State rules that apply

  • What the rule says: “Generated kWh will be applied against the kWh that you have consumed during the billing cycle. This will reduce the amount of energy that you buy from your electric supplier”[1]

What it means for sizing and batteries

When exports earn close to the retail price, sizing the system to cover your yearly use is usually the best value, and a battery is mainly for backup rather than savings.

The calculator uses the statewide rule until we add utility rates. See what solar costs in Maine.
