State rules that apply
- What the rule says: “If your net consumption is negative, you will receive a net metering credit on your electricity bill.”[1]
What it means for sizing and batteries
When exports earn close to the retail price, sizing the system to cover your yearly use is usually the best value, and a battery is mainly for backup rather than savings.
The calculator uses the statewide rule until we add utility rates. See what solar costs in Massachusetts.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does Massachusetts have net metering?
Investor-owned distribution utilities must offer net metering under G.L. c. 164 s. 138-140 and 220 CMR 18.00; residential rooftop solar is typically a Class I facility (60 kW or less), and systems of 25 kW or less are exempt from the net metering cap. When generation exceeds use, the customer gets a net metering credit on the bill based on the utility's per-kWh charges (near-retail for small systems), which rolls over.
