State rules that apply
- What the rule says: “At the end of an annualized period, the customer-generator will receive credit on their utility bill at the wholesale value of electricity for any excess generation that remains”[1]
What it means for sizing and batteries
When exports earn close to the retail price, sizing the system to cover your yearly use is usually the best value, and a battery is mainly for backup rather than savings.
The calculator uses the statewide rule until we add utility rates. See what solar costs in New Jersey.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does New Jersey have net metering?
New Jersey utilities must offer net metering to systems sized no larger than the customer's annual usage; customers get full retail kWh credit, banked kWh are netted annually, and any excess left at the end of the annualized period is credited at the wholesale value of electricity.
