What Ameren Missouri pays for exported solar
For a new rooftop system, Ameren Missouri credits exported energy at about 3.54¢ per kWh[1], against an average Missouri residential price of 14.28¢[2]. Exports first offset what you use over each month at the retail rate; this rate applies only to the surplus left over.
Other Missouri utilities, co-ops and municipal utilities set their own rates; check your utility's current tariff.
State rules that apply
- What the rule says: “credited an amount at least equal to the avoided fuel cost of the excess kilowatt-hours generated during the billing period, with this credit applied to the following billing period”[3]
What it means for sizing and batteries
When exports earn close to the retail price, sizing the system to cover your yearly use is usually the best value, and a battery is mainly for backup rather than savings.
The calculator uses the statewide rule until we add utility rates. See what solar costs in Missouri.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does Missouri have net metering?
Missouri's Net Metering and Easy Connection Act requires every utility (Ameren Missouri, Evergy, Liberty, co-ops and municipal utilities) to offer net metering for systems up to 100 kW: exports offset your usage at the full retail rate within each monthly billing period. If you export more than you use in a month, the surplus is credited at the utility's avoided fuel cost (Ameren Missouri: 3.84 c/kWh summer, 3.39 c/kWh winter) on the next bill, and unused credits expire after 12 months without payment.
