State rules that apply
- What the rule says: “"Net metering period" means the 12-month period following the date of final interconnection of the eligible customer-generator's or eligible agricultural customer-generator's system”[1]
What it means for sizing and batteries
When exports earn close to the retail price, sizing the system to cover your yearly use is usually the best value, and a battery is mainly for backup rather than savings.
The calculator uses the statewide rule until we add utility rates. See what solar costs in Virginia.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does Virginia have net metering?
Under Va. Code 56-594, investor-owned utilities (Dominion, Appalachian Power) offer net energy metering netted over a 12-month period from interconnection, with any annual excess compensated under a contract; electric cooperatives run programs under 56-594.01. The SCC must periodically set successor tariffs; in its Dominion proceeding (PUR-2025-00079, decided spring 2026) it reportedly rejected Dominion's proposed credit cut and kept annual energy-based netting.
